Can You Build A Klann Mechanism Spider Robot With Strawbees?

Objective:

Design and build a six-legged spider robot using Strawbees robotics kits and incorporating a Klann mechanism for efficient movement.

Instructions:

  • Introduction to Klann Mechanism:
    • Explain the concept of a Klann mechanism to the students, highlighting its importance in robotics for creating efficient leg movement similar to that of spiders.
    • Note: The Klann linkage is a planar mechanism designed to simulate the gait of a legged animal and function as a wheel replacement or leg mechanism. It consists of a frame, a crank, two grounded rockers, and two couplers, all connected by pivot joints.
    • What the videos for examples:
  • Brainstorming and Design:
    • Divide students into teams and encourage them to brainstorm ideas for designing a six-legged spider robot using the Klann mechanism.
    • Provide them with the Engineering & Reflection Sheet to sketch their initial designs.
  • Prototype Construction:
    • Once the teams have finalized their designs, provide them with the Strawbees robotics kits and other materials, as determined.
    • Instruct them to start building prototypes of their spider robots according to their designs.
    • Encourage experimentation and adjustments as they progress.
  • Incorporating Klann Mechanism:
    • Guide the students in integrating the Klann mechanism into their spider robot designs. Explain the function of the mechanism in facilitating efficient leg movement.
    • Assist teams in troubleshooting any challenges they encounter while incorporating the mechanism.
  • Testing and Iteration:
    • After completing the construction, allocate time to test the spider robots.
    • Set up a testing area with different surfaces and obstacles to observe how well the robots navigate.
    • Encourage teams to analyze the performance of their robots and make any necessary adjustments or improvements.
  • Presentation and Reflection:
    • Each team will present their spider robot to the class, explaining their design choices and the function of the Klann mechanism and demonstrating the robot’s movement.
    • Facilitate a discussion where students reflect on their design process, challenges faced, and lessons learned.
    • Have each student utilize the Engineering & Reflection Sheet to note their challenges and reflect on their project and processes.
  • Extension Activities (Optional):
    • Allow teams to compete in challenges, such as speed races or obstacle courses, to test the capabilities of their spider robots.
